Annual Goals

This report lists the annual improvement goals reported to ESE in the educator preparation program provider’s state annual report. Providers may report up to three goals for the upcoming year and are asked to report on progress made toward the prior year’s goals. Annual goals are reported in May of the academic year listed.

Annual Goals - 2016
Goal #1 The School of Education and Social Policy has been working closely and in response to requests from our partner districts to develop and add new educator preparation program offerings to help meet the needs for new leaders, support personnel (guidance) and teachers. This year we have worked to create, design and are seeking approval from MA Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (ESE) for Administrative Leadership and School Guidance Counseling program expand building upon our successful teacher education programs. In addition a fifth delivery model for our graduate programs has been implemented with the creation of a hybrid competency-based education graduate teacher education program.
Goal #2 Faculty and staff have worked to review all existing programs, as we reconstructed our coursework and field-based experiences to align with the state's revised Professional Standards for Teachers (PST) and to support the full implementation of ESE's new teacher assessment tool - Candidate Assessment of Performance (CAP).
Goal #3 Field-Based Experiences have been closely reviewed, as part of the PST Implementation requirements and CAP continuous improvement initiatives. The expectations, experiences and outcomes of pre-practicum and practicum have been reviewed and modified to enhance and increase the duration of school-based experiences, to better prepare aspiring teachers.

Annual Goals - 2015
Goal #1 Monitoring and managing the growth of the School of Education and Social Policy is an ongoing priority, as providing additional faculty, staff, administrative and supports are crucial to our student's success.
Goal #2 Creating and expanding additional on campus delivery model options at the graduate and undergraduate levels, allows us to reach a wider pool of student applicants with the goal of recruiting a talented and diverse student population.
Goal #3 The graduate programs will be working to fully implement recently revised programs, while providing seamless transitions for those existing students.

Progress Toward Goals - 2015
Goal #1 Merrimack College had an extensive national search resulting in a new dean for the School of Education and Social Policy, who brings tremendous knowledge and experience. An associate dean position has been added, a full-time faculty member and an administrative support staff joined SESP this year, as well. These hires provide additional support and guidance for students in the teacher education programs.
Goal #2 Merrimack College is working strategically, to provide increased access to our teacher education programs by offering several delivery models. These five distinctly different program options have enabled the college to increase access to individuals who are at various points in their educational, career and life. Currently the delivery modes include: a full year graduate fellowship, self-paced graduate program, a newly launched, hybrid competency-based graduate program, a two plus two for those with an associate degree and a long-established traditional undergraduate program.
Goal #3 Graduate programs curriculum revisions and course credit adjustments have been fully implemented, based on a credit consolidation effort, in connection with an overall scheduling overhaul. These alterations to our graduate programs will allow students to have greater access to coursework, as courses can be offered more frequently and with greater predictability. This allows students to set their own pace for program completion.

Annual Goals - 2014
Goal #1 The Dean, Department Chair, faculty and staff have completed a comprehensive review of the teacher education programs, to address ESE report findings and college distribution course requirements modifications. As a result of this analysis, faculty are identifying changes to be approved by the governing committee for curriculum at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
Goal #2 Faculty are working with a wide array of Arts and Science faculty to address the program modifications needed to continue to strengthen the content course work and to make adjustments for the SEI course.
Goal #3 At all levels within the school there will be an effort to continue to enhance the services, supports and programs to guide/advise students in their program of study. Faculty advisors, practicum supervisors, workshop leaders, MTEL supports and newly created Student Support Service staff positions are intended to help teacher candidates to be successful.

Progress Toward Goals - 2014
Goal #1 The faculty, staff and leadership teams worked to identify and set in motion needed steps on campus within the governance structure to gain approval for graduate modifications, and are continuing efforts at the undergraduate level.
Goal #2 The Dean, faculty leaderships and other administrators have reviewed options to make adjustments to UG program design and have begun to make staffing changes to implement these upcoming changes.
Goal #3 Efforts have been made to increase faculty positions and campus wide resources to meet the rise in enrollment of students at Merrimack College and within the School of Education & Social Policy. Adding courses, faculty, advisors and support staff has happened and will continue to be monitored.
